Lack of printed manual makes unit useless November 28, 2009 Victor 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Since this unit is VERY difficult to program--and-- since the 996XT does NOT come with a printed or printable manual, I have to rate the 996XT a 2.
IF Uniden would provide a printed manual or a .pdf printable manual, I would rate this unit with 5 stars. I had the fortune of having my 996xt pre-programmed when I purchased it and if it were not for that, the 996XT would be a paperweight. With the pre-programming, I think it is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from my original BCD396. If you get the 996xt--I highly recommend pre-programming and some software to use it (I use the Arc software).
SEVERE Downgrade and SIGNIFICANT confusion on why Uniden still uses a Serial port (for GPS) and made the GLARING and unforgivable mistake of not providing a printed or printable manual for the 996XT.
If Uniden can turn the manual mistake around, my rating would be significantly higher. My personal opinion is that anyone who has the unit or is thinking of purchasing it, that they write/call Uniden and tell them to fix this SIGNIFICANT oversight of no printed manual. Without a manual, the unit is USELESS.

A great scanning radio April 26, 2009 Hi-Tech Geek (Pgh, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this for my fireman brother. I warned him it might be a pain to program from reviews listed here. The firmware allowed him to pick our county and away it went. He is very happy with the scanner.
Great Scanner but poor tech support February 5, 2008 L. Stemm (Ohio United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Great Scanner but poor tech support from Uniden. Had to send out to get programed from scannermaster.
Great scanner if you are willing to spend extra! December 22, 2006 Robert M. Nealon 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic scanner. It has some really neat features if you are willing to spend that much. I suggest buying a USB cable to program it with because the cable it comes with does not fit into many new computers. Otherwise, no other complaints! Great scanner!
Great Scanner November 1, 2006 R. Zauner 12 out of 23 found this review helpful
The engineered design being versatile, whether desktop or installed into a vehicle dashboard, is a great feat!
In my opinion, Uniden should have created their BCD996T control software using Cygwin/Gtk to compile all, Win32,Linux & Mac OSX binaries. Instead, Uniden only provides Win32 binaries of their software.
(Not to fret, Linux/Mac users can run the BCD996T scanner software under Wine. Some but not all Windows bugs are eliminated using Wine.)
I prefer versatille code, so the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5 stars!
Amazon next day shipping is great! ;-)
